Gardening Tip: Lawn Care

Gardening Tip: Lawn Care

I’m sure you’ve noticed that business, or that home in your neighborhood that has a perfectly uniform BROWN lawn. Brown? Yes! Brown is a color too.

And then you think to yourself, “Well, why doesn’t my lawn look that … brown?”

Because you may notice that you still have some green patches of weeds popping up. It takes regular and routine maintenance to get to utopia in the lawn! And this time of year is the perfect time to be thinking about that preventative treatment to help achieve that perfect, brown lawn.

Using a pre-emerge herbicide is possibly the most important part of lawn maintenance. By using a pre-emerge herbicide in your lawn, all of those seeds that have been spread by the lawn mower, by wind or by animals will not survive. Pre-emerge chemicals kill the seedlings immediately after they germinate, and in fact, there is one chemical – Dimension - that will kill crabgrass seedlings for several weeks after they have germinated. If you’re looking for a product containing Dimension, you can find it in Turf and Ornamental Weed and Grass Stopper by Hi-Yield.

By applying this pre-emerge herbicide in late January or early February you will be one step ahead of those pesky little weed seeds that are still viable at the soil level. And then once the warm spring temperatures come back and all of those seeds start germinating, you’ll be able to relax knowing that your pre-emerge application will take care of them for you!

And then come spring, when you’re ready to do a weed and feed application, be sure to come by your favorite Louisiana Nursery location to get the best recommendation for your lawn!
