Cutting Lawn Patterns

Much as you might be tempted to go on autopilot when mowing your lawn, it's actually better to have a set of different routes. Running your mower over the lawn in the same way each time will cause wheel ruts, "scuffing" where you turn and a "lean" to the grass's growing direction. Try going lengthwise, widthwise, diagonally, write your name in it, whatever. But whichever route you take, make sure each pass overlaps the previous one by a few inches and try to throw cut grass toward where you have not yet mowed so it gets recut and decomposes more easily.
