Homeownership rates among millennials are significantly lower than generation X and the baby boomers before them. More people at the same point of their lives and careers are instead renting or living without a traditional yard space for gardening. This steady decline produced a new market within the seemingly mismatched customer base: miniature and “fairy gardens”.
Garden centers around the country – including Louisiana Nursery – have taken notice of the trend and dramatically increased the selection of small, indoor friendly, low-maintenance gardening options. Miniature gardening tends to focus on the plants themselves more than the aesthetic. This is opposed to fairy gardening, which utilizes props and decorative potting for display purposes.
Whether you are a new homeowner or renting, succulents and the like provide a relatively inexpensive introduction to planting. They work great for children without access to plots of their own. It never feels like a chore to care for them because the routine is so infrequent compared to, say, a vegetable garden out back.
Louisiana Nursery has found a good bit of success by posting regular highlights of our new stock, and mini-garden content is by far the most popular. The bias towards younger buyers probably explains why that might be, along with the general trends in the plant world.
You can see here that many of our pre-potted plants are in combinations. Combo pieces or “potted bouquets” of succulents go beautifully with ceramic whites and creams of almost any simplistic design. Classic terracotta brings out the waving shades of green. Its honestly quite difficult to make the “wrong” purchase when it comes to miniature gardening. I hope to see you all getting the next generation excited about gardening!
