Monstera Thai Constellation: About the Plant & Unique Characteristics
Monstera Thai Constellation produces the perfect mix of striking variegation and a massive canvas on which to display it. Its large, fenestrated (slotted) leaves can easily reach 2ft wide indoors, and we’ve grown several specimens with leaves between 3ft-4ft.
The bold gold-green variegated contrast is what immediately catches the eye, but further inspection reveals a variety of patterns and shapes that gives each plant – and even each new leaf – a sense of personality.
Some leaves unfurl with defined streaks, others with solid fills, but almost all contain a smattering of golden dots and dashes which serve as the Thai Constellation’s namesake. These unique variegations mix and match together wonderfully, encompassing the entire body of the plant, including its stalky stems.
While it’s hardly considered a “rare” find to exotic tropical enthusiasts at this point, it is a must-have for anyone looking to start a collection. Plus, all these years of availability means growers have honed the plant’s most sought-after characteristics (bigger leaves, better variegations, better prices).

Thai Constellation Light Requirements
For best growth, Thai Constellation wants bright light, as much as you can give it. It can handle patio placement extremely well, even thriving once acclimated. However, it will easily burn if placed in direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon hours.
If placed in low-light settings, vitality and growth rate will diminish significantly. Although, artificial light (plant lights) can negate these issues.
Thai Constellation Water Requirements
Thorough, infrequent watering is recommended for Thai Constellation and most every other Monstera. Overwatering is often the cause of plant failure for Thai Constellation, so allow the soil to almost fully dry before deeply watering again (as opposed to constant shallow watering, which is not healthy for the plant). Depending on soil medium, light levels, humidity, and container size, this can range from 1-2 days up to almost a full week.
Thai Constellation Potting Soil Mix Preference
To help reduce root-rot or fungal issues, use a well-draining potting mix. We recommend mixing in some perlite, orchid bark, lava rock, biochar, or anything else that helps to keep the soil aerated. Houseplant mixes, well-draining potting mixes, and our Louisiana Nursery Potting Mix will all perform wonderfully with Thai Constellation Monstera.
You’ll want to avoid garden soil, topsoil, and compost (standalone) as these will almost certainly retain too much water.
Thai Constellation Fertilizer Requirements
For chemical fertilizers – whether in liquid form, granules, or powder – you can safely use a balanced NPK ratio. Some gardeners find that a tailored NPK (3, 1, 2, or 5, 2, 3) can be slightly closer to the plant’s feeding needs.
Regardless, Thai Constellation Monstera is a slow feeder that is prone to salt / mineral buildup from overfertilizing. We recommend applying chemical fertilizers at half the manufacturer’s suggested concentration (dilute with water for liquids or adjust the dosage for granules & powders).
For the safest way to feed your Monstera without root burn, opt for an organic approach instead: kelp / seaweed fertilizer, worm castings, and other relatively low nitrogen formulas take the stress out of your fertilizer program.
Thai Constellation Growth Habits
Monstera plants need support to reach their full potential, as they can reach over 10ft tall in optimal conditions and enough time. A trellis, moss pole, stake, etc. will help take some weight off the plant, and encourage even bigger leaves (2-3ft wide).
If intentionally trained up a structure, you can keep the outward footprint of Thai Constellation at 4-5ft wide without hampering its growth.
If looking to keep this plant in a much smaller space, simply prune as desired and it will recover without issue. Your Thai Constellation will look and grow just as healthy with 2-3 leaves.
How to Propagate Thai Constellation Monstera
Propagation is relatively straightforward, but because Thai Constellations are prone to rot, cleanliness and patience are key.
- Find a Node: Locate a healthy stem section that includes at least one prominent leaf and an aerial root or node (the brown, bumpy node where roots will emerge).
- Make the Cut: Using a sharp, sterilized knife or shears, cut about an inch below the node. Allow the raw cut on your new cutting to callous over for 12-24 hours before placing it in water or a moist medium.
- Choose Your Medium:
- Water: Place the node in fresh water, keeping the leaf itself completely dry. Change the water every 3–5 days to keep oxygen levels high and ward off bacteria.
- Sphagnum Moss / Perlite: Pack moist sphagnum moss or perlite lightly around the node in a small cup with drainage. This provides excellent aeration while maintaining essential humidity.
- Provide Warmth & Light: Keep your cutting in a warm spot with plenty of bright, indirect light. Root growth can be slow—often taking several weeks to a few months—so avoid moving or checking the cut constantly.
- Pot It Up: Once the newly developed roots are at least 2–3 inches long and beginning to branch out, plant your new Thai Constellation into a small pot using your airy, well-draining soil mix!
