Location, Location, Location: Azaleas prefer dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade, especially in our hot Louisiana summers. Avoid full, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and flowers. Consider the mature size of your chosen variety when selecting a spot.
Soil Prep is Key: Test your soil pH. Azaleas prefer a pH between 5.0 and 6.0. Amend heavy clay soil with plenty of organic matter like compost, aged manure, or peat moss to improve drainage and aeration. Raised beds or mounds can also be beneficial in areas with poor drainage.
Timing is Everything: The ideal time to plant azaleas in Southeast Louisiana is in the fall (September-November) or early spring (February-March). This allows the roots to establish before the freezes of winter and the extreme heat of summer.

Planting Your Azalea
Dig the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep.
