Halloween Pumpkin Planters: The Favorite Halloween Tradition With A Gardener’s Twist
Independent garden centers like Louisiana Nursery are some of the best places to find a wide variety of pumpkins, gourds, and other fall seasonal items at great prices! For Halloween pumpkins specifically, we’ve got a huge range of colors and sizes to choose from and pumpkin kits for stenciling, scooping seeds, and carving to your heart’s content!
As you might expect, gardeners love taking anything and everything to do with traditional holidays and incorporate their own favorite hobby, creating a beautiful fusion that sparked an online trend.
Introducing: The Halloween Pumpkin Planter! If carving a jack-o-lantern was fun, potting one up with an assortment of beautiful flowers and foliage is a gardener’s dream come true.
While this trend has been popping up online intermittently, this year our staff brought it to Louisiana Nursery in style. All of the photos you’ll see are their projects, and we will definitely be doing more for years to come. We hope enough customers seeing them throughout the stores will create some inspiration for new and unique designs.
A Fall Fusion of Halloween & Gardening
This opens up a world of natural textures and colors to your planters for the fall season, combining fall themes with the flowers that gardeners love. Our full-sized pumpkins work best for the intricate mixed pieces, but if the traditional heirloom is too big for your space, check out these mini-pumpkins filled with succulents and small bedding flowers! The moisture inside the pumpkin alone with keep your succulent happy until you repot them. I love the look of the white pumpkins with dark green succulents of various sizes and shapes!
If you’d rather buy your pumpkin and plants separately – which we definitely encourage for the experience – you’ll want to start by carving the top of the pumpkin to fit your plant selection. The succulents and bedding flower look great with the snug fit.
Next, you’ll want to carve a small hole in the bottom of the pumpkin to allow for proper drainage. This matters more for flowers, as succulents will likely last without water longer than the pumpkin will look appealing. For gardeners with a little OCD, we suggest a few toothpick-sized holes in the bottom for drainage. From there, have fun with it by using markers to make designs or paint the pumpkin to your liking!
Spooky Season Activity for the Whole Family
Depending on when you carved it and where you set it, your pumpkin planter could last a few days to over a week. Setting the pumpkin inside with the cooler temperatures will last longer than direct light from that Louisiana sun. If you’re buying a pumpkin, though, you probably knew going in that longevity wasn’t the point. You got it because you love the spooky season, or because you’ll have a blast carving… “interesting” faces with the kids!
So, why not take your Halloween experience to the next level this year by potting up a few flowers or succulents with them instead? There’s always some leftover options post-Halloween, and it’s worth the couple of dollars to throw something beautiful together with the ones you love!
