Function and Other 2021 Gardening Trends

Vertical and multifunction gardening has exploded in recent years. The social and working conditions of 2021 also accelerated the increase in consumer adoption and general interest. Every one of you reading this has likely spent more time at home over the past 12 months than anytime in recent memory. This changed how people might view their green space; without any other ways to experience nature, the backyard could be a valuable, personal avenue for just that.

Vertical gardening can take on many forms, the most common being stand alone towers and the controlled chaos of walled gardening! The plants are still specifically selected for look and purpose. This is opposed to another trend – “rewilding” – which allows the wild foliage and grasses to retake portions of the space. Both serve the explicit purpose to bring a bit more nature to the yard, especially regarding height and overall coverage.

2020-2021 have been the hottest years on record for new pool, patio, and outdoor entertainment space construction. This contrast well with the previous trends in that, rather than nature being extended to the home, the home is being extended to nature. These amenities are great for outdoor entertainment, but a pool will not overshadow a well-integrated garden.

Multifunctional gardens fit perfectly within the needs of renovating homeowners.  Social media posts of finished projects are stunning; outdoor living rooms and bars with a rooftop garden are great examples of the innovative ways greenery can be functional and aesthetically complimentary. The best part about these trends in my opinion are the “Do-It-Yourself” types who craft their own set pieces! I am truly amazed at how talented gardeners can be when they’ve got time to spare.
